Vestal Pool News Release
(VESTAL, NY) – Vestal Town Supervisor John Schaffer today announced that construction on a new pool and spray park in the Town of Vestal has begun. The $3.69M project is supported by $2.5M in Federal American Rescue Plan Act Funds, $650K in State Assembly funds secured by Assemblywoman Lupardo, $250K in American Rescue Plan Act funds secured by County Executive Jason Garner & the Broome County Legislature and $150K in State Senate Grant funding secured by Senator Lea Webb.
After 55 years serving the Vestal community and Broome County residents alike, the Vestal Memorial Swimming Pool, located at 111 Clayton Avenue in the Town of Vestal, was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, the pool has been unable to reopen due to a dire need for repair and replacement of worn equipment.
The project announced today is a complete reconstruction of the facility on its current site. Project highlights include a reduced pool size to accommodate a walk-in area for all abilities, replacement of the current bathhouse to allow for comfortable locker and bathrooms, as well as the addition of a first aid room, a lifeguard and personnel office, and storage areas. Modern compliant pumping and disinfection facilities will also be constructed.
With the pool project expected to be completed in May of 2024, the revamped Vestal Memorial Pool will also be home to one of the largest spray parks in Broome County. By investing in a long-term solution and adding a state-of-the-art spray park, the facility will serve and attract residents and visitors alike for years to come.
John Schaffer, Vestal Town Supervisor, said, “We are all very happy to get this project started. The pool complex will be expanded to include a Splash Park for all to enjoy. We are extremely grateful for the financial support from state and local officials and eagerly await our grand opening next summer.”
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, said, “I am very happy to see the Vestal Memorial Pool reconstruction finally getting underway. The Splash Park will be a very popular addition that I’m sure will be enjoyed by all. A sincere thank you to all of my partners in government for this great collaboration.”
County Executive Jason Garnar, said, "Generations of families have spent their summers at the Vestal Memorial Pool. Rebuilding the pool and adding a splash park will ensure that residents can enjoy this community asset for years to come. Thank you to Chairman Dan Reynolds and the County Legislature, along with Assemblywoman Lupardo, for their support of this project."
Senator Lea Webb, said, “I am happy to celebrate the revitalization of the Vestal Swimming Pool, which will also include an addition of a splash pad and modern amenities. For over five decades, this pool has been a hub of recreation and community, and it is with great enthusiasm that we begin this much-needed restoration. I congratulate my partners in government for their commitment to this project, and I am happy to bring an additional $150,000 in State Senate Grant funding to support this important community initiative,"
